This perception has been caused by anecdotal evidence largely made available on the internet. In reality, there is insufficient evidence about both the effectiveness of SOCE (sexual orientation change efforts) therapies or the potential for harm, according to the American Psychological Association's document "Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation". This document makes reference to Lilienfeld's (2007) article "Psychological Treatments that Cause harm" where it is referenced ten times with subliminal implication that Reparative Therapy may cause harm. Lilienfeld's article has two lists - (i) therapies that are likely to harm some people, and (ii) therapies that may possibly harm some people. Yet reparative therapy doesn't appear on either list; neither is there any reference to it, or to anything to do with homosexuality in his entire article.
